Getafe have progressed to the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup in their debut European campaign after Albin's 77th minute strike secured a 1-0 home win for the Azulones in tonight's last 16 second leg. The Spanish club, decimated by injuries and fielding a makeshift starting line up, finished comfortably as 3-1 aggregate winners over Benfica following their 2-1 first leg victory in Portugal…
The home side sealed their place in Friday's quarter-final draw thanks to Albín, who skipped past the desperate challenge of Konstantinos Katsouranis before coolly chipping the ball over Quim from 23 yards out.
The visiting side, whilst dominant in terms of possession, were lacking in ideas and rarely tested the Getafe defence in spite of the hosts makeshift line-up. Benfica did come close in the 67th minute when Rui Costa tested Abbondanzieri with a fierce shot, but the Argentine keeper reacted well to pull off a fine save. It was too little too late from the Portuguese.
Ruben de La Red, the young midfielder who is winning many admirers throughout Spain and the rest of Europe, looked particularly solid playing out of position as a centre half in place of the injured Belenguer.
