Perhaps for the first time ever we find ourselves in complete agreement with Bernd Schuster: neither of us would include a Real Madrid player in this weeks La Liga Team of the Week…
There has been a lot of talk about Valencia looking for a new goalkeeper in the summer, with Carlos Kameni heading the list. However, a few more performances like the one against Real Madrid on Sunday and Timo Hildebrand might be able to convince the Valencia hierarchy that he should be the long term successor to Santi Canizares. The 28 year old German goalkeeper may have played a decisive role in this season's league title race after a fabulous performance at the Bernabeu that kept Raul and co from running away with the match. The Valencia keeper may perhaps could have done better for one of Raul's goals, but a number of miraculous saves are what deserve to be taken from a performance by a keeper who seems to have discovered his form at the same time as the rest of his team. Timo Hildebrand therefore lines up in the La Liga Review number one jersey this week.
We need say nothing about our Right Back: Daniel Alves, who has made more appearances in our select XI than any other player in La Liga. The Brazilian may be plying his trade in Spain next season, or he may not, but right now he is the undisputed best RB in La Liga. Joan Capdevila, another regular, lines up on the opposite flank at LB as his link play with Matias Fernandez continues to be a key factor in Villarreal's steady climb to the top of the table.
Our two centre halves both put in commanding performances at the weekend. Pablo is already well known and has recovered from his troubled start to the season. However, Racing Santander's Moratón usually finds himself in the shadow of the more talked about Garay, but in the absence of his injured team mate put in a fine performance this weekend that helped maintain his side's pursuit of European qualification for next season.
Our midfield trio of Senna (Villarreal), Iniesta (Barcelona), and Matias Fernández (Villarreal) has the right balance of flair, passing and defensive solidity to trouble any opposition. Marcos Senna may be something of a late bloomer but the 31 year old is a using his experience at the heart of midfield to make a case for being labelled the best DM in La Liga. It would be easy to argue that Andres Iniesta has been Barcelona's player of the season and while his more famous team mates consistently underperform, Iniesta consistently shows the rest of them how it's done.
A lot was expected of Matias Fernandez at the start of this season and 'Matigol's 27th minute strike shows why the young Chilean is starting to live up to his billing as one of the most exciting prospects in La Liga.
Another player with a great future ahead of him is Bojan Krkic and this week the 17 year old showed the maturity to take the initiative in a vital game when his more celebrated strike partners Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o were frequently found wanting. Frank Rijkaard may be trying to protect the youngster by staggering his progression in top flight football, but it is hard to see why Bojan should often find himself omitted at the expense of Henry who's inclusion can only be justified by reputation alone.
There is not a lot more to say when it comes to justifying the inclusion of David Villa and Kun Aguero in our forward line and both must frighten the life out of opposition defenders when their name appears on the team sheet. With a brace at the Bernabeu it's good to see Villa finally finding his form in what has been a troubled season at Valencia and the Mestalla outfit are going to have a fight on their hands this summer if they want to keep hold of him. Aguero, meanwhile, seems to have decided that with Messi's injury hit season keeping his fellow Argentine out of the way that it is young Kun's turn to try and stake a claim on that ' Next Maradona' name tag.
