Champions League Result: Sevilla 3 Fenerbahce 2 (Away side win on penalties)
A carnival atmosphere in Seville could not prevent the home side from crashing out on penalties after Fenerbahce grabbed the two vital away goals that would force this first knockout round tie to go the distance.
The 3-2 full time result, that follwed on from Fenerbahce's 3-2 first leg victory in Istanbul , ensured that the match would go to extra time and penalties. Fenerbahce keeper Volkan Demirel commited two dreadful errors inside the opening nine minutes that allowed Daniel Alves and Seydou Keita to give the home side a 2-0 lead. However, two Deivid goals either side of Kanoute's third for Sevilla permitted the visiting goalkeeper to make amends with three saves in the ensuing penalty shootout.
Before the match the Sevilla coach, Manolo Jimenez, had called for his side to play with intelligence rather than instinct. However, the coach's words seemed to hamper a Sevilla side who, after taking the early two goal lead, appeared to withdraw in to their shells rather than display their trademark brand of attacking football. Sevilla's conservative approach gave Fenerbahce the time and space to grow in terms of both confidence and posession. As the visitors created more and more chances, the home side looked increasingly nervy and there was always the feeling that Fenerbahce could turn the party atmosphere in to a more sombre occasion.
Manolo Jiménez, the Sevilla coach, accepted his share of the blame admitted that his side could have been more positive after taking the lead, saying "We had problems with strategy, as usual this season. We should have avoided conceding these two goals. It's a shock. At 2-0, Sevilla couldn't hold on because we didn't kill off the game. We always attack and attack and we gave away dangerous corners and free-kicks. We had more possession but Fenerbahçe attacked well. We were worrying and we don't know why."
