UEFA Cup First leg result: Benfica 1 Getafe 2
An impressive performance from a youthful Getafe has given them a one goal advantage to take in to the second leg of their UEFA Cup tie with Benfica.
The Azulones started the match as underdogs but were soon in command after Oscar Cardozo was dismissed early in the first half. The Benfica player appeared to throw a punch at David Belenguer and the referee had little choice but to produce a red card and reduce the home side down to ten men.
The visitors soon made their numerical advantage count and on 25 minutes Ruben De La Red chased a through ball into the Benfica box and lashed a left footed strike toward goal. The ball took a cruel deflection off of Edcarlos that sent it past Quim and in to the back of the Benfica net.
The visitors almost grabbed a second goal just before the interval, but Albin's shot could not find a way through.
Benfica started the second half well and were it not for an excellent save by Oscar Ustari in the Getafe goal, the hosts might have scored an equaliser.
It was the visiting side that opened the scoring in the second half, however, when Pablo Hernandez's low shot from the edge of the area squeezed in at the far post.
With quarter of an hour remaining, Pedro Mantorras gave the home side a lifeline when his long range shot found its way past Oscar Ustari in the Getafe goal. The young Argentine keeper could have done better and his late reaction was the one black mark against an otherwise solid performance.
The match finished with Benfica pushing for the equaliser and with Getafe looking to hit them on the counter it was a fairly open final ten minutes.
The visitors who must now be considered favourites ahead of the second leg thanks to their two vital away goals.
