Copa Del Rey First Leg Semi Final Result
1-0 De la Red (24 mins)
1-1 Smolarek (27 mins)
2-1 Casquero (57 mins)
3-1 Manu del Moral (82 mins)
Getafe have given themselves the upper hand in this two legged tie after punishing Racing Santander’s defensive errors at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. If Racing are to reach the Copa Del Rey final for the first time in their history, then they will need to be more clinical in front of goal during the return leg than they were in this evening’s match. However, the tie is not yet decided – Getafe do not have “a foot and a half” in the final as Marca put it - and Racing have given themselves hope after scoring a vital away goal.
This evening’s first leg was a far more even sided affair than the scoreline suggests and Laudrup’s side rarely had the upper hand over Marcelino’s. The match began with both sides battling for control of the midfield and a fascinating encounter between De la Red / Casquero and Colsa / Duscher ensued.
Chances fell to both as neither were able to assert themselves in terms of posession, but it was Getafe who finally broke the deadlock when De la Red was gifted a free header from a Getafe corner kick on 24 minutes.
However, just three minutes later, Smolarek was able to convert a Racing corner at the other end, prodding the ball home amidst a goalmouth scramble after Getafe were unable to clear.
The two sides were level at half time and it was Racing who almost took the lead after the restart when Tchite failed to convert after finding himself one on one with Ustari in the Getafe goal. The visitors were punished moments later when, in a similar situation, Casquero was able to slot the ball past Toño to give Getafe a 2-1 lead (57 mins).
As the game wore on it was Racing who looked the most likely to score with Munitis looking particularly threatening. However, on 82 minutes, Racing were caught out by a Getafe counter attack and some more poor defending when Manu found himself unmarked on the end of a Pablo Hernandez cross to head the ball toward Ustari. The keeper managed to parry the shot, but Manu, finding himself unchallenged by a Racing defender, stroked the ball in to the back of the net.
