Real Madrid face a tough trip to Roma this evening, but Schuster will be boosted by the return of Raul and Ruud Van Nistelrooy to his starting eleven. The attacking pair have scored 116 Champione League goals between them over the course of their respective careers...
Roma are second in the Italian league, eleven points behind leaders Inter Milan, and have lost just three league matches this season – one less than Madrid. Roma lost 1-0 to Juventus at the weekend, but the home side remain confident and Spalletti is able to field a strong starting XI with no considerable injury concerns. Daniele De Rossi has struggled with flu but it would seem that the midfielder has recovered and is likely to feature this evening.
Schster will have concerns ahead of the game, not least after losing on their last two matches away from the Bernabeu, and because of a lengthy injury list that threatens a fragile squad at this crucial stage of the season. Pepe, Javier Saviola, Robinho, Christoph Metzelder, Marcelo and Wesley Sneijder are all missing through injury.
The good news for Schuster, along with the return of Raul and Ruud, is that Heinze returns to the defence and should shore up the clubs evident weaknesses that have proven costly in recent League fixtures.
Roma are unbeaten at home this term, but the omens are good for Schuster: Real Madrid have never lost in Rome in this competition and the German will be confident that his side can win on the return leg at the Bernabeu where Madrid have proven formidable this season.
