Champions League Result: AS Roma 2 Real Madrid 1
AS Roma will take a slim advantage to the Santiago Bernabeu in a fortnight’s time after Mancini’s second half goal helped the home side come from behind to record their first home win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Madrid had won on all three of their previous visits to Roma and that pattern looked set to continue when Raul gave the visitors the lead after just eight minutes. However, Spalletti’s side levelled through David Pizarro midway through the first half and Mancini subsequently gave the Italian side hope of progressing to the quarter finals of the competition with his second half strike.
Madrid had several chances to put the game beyond the home side and even had the ball in the back of the Roma net, only for Van Nistelrooy’s finish to be ruled off side. Roma clung on for the victory in spite of sustained pressure from the visiting side and Madrid will feel disappointed that they will not be taking a level scoreline back to Madrid. Real were dominant in possession and their recent defensive frailties appeared to have been rectified, however, Roma are accustomed to taking the few chances that come their way in Serie A and the Spanish side were duly punished.
Bernd Schuster will have to do without Sergio Ramos for the second leg after the Madrid defender picked up a yellow card, his fifth in the tournament, that will lead to a one match suspension.
