Amidst all the negativity surrounding the Bernabeu right now, there is one player who you can count on to come out fighting. As combative of the field as he is on it, the veteran full back thinks that Real Madrid have everything to play for in this, their most important week of the season.
With a vital Champion’s league game and the Clasico against Barcelona just around the corner, Salgado is focused on this weekends league clash with Getafe. Speaking on Cadena Ser last night, Salgado said “For me, the most important game is the one against Getafe. Its going to be a tough week with three important matches that will decide our season – starting with Getafe. We’ve got to win at home against what is always a tough opponent”
“We know that we are going to come up against a side that has made it difficult for us at both home and away over the last two seasons. Depending on the result, we will go to the camp nou feeling that we can do something important”
“We have every reason to be optimistic. Right now we are still competitive in two competitions, and in spite of the fact that we’ve not been at our best, because other times like Barcelona haven’t been strong, we are still in with a chance”
Salgado is counting on his experience at Real Madrid to help his side through the challenges of the next week ; “This weekend we have everything to play for this season, as much in the league as the Champions league. I’ve been here before. In my first season we were poor in the league; we got through the knockout stages and went on to become European champions”
Always ready to speak his mind on any matter, the Madrid defender feels that Marc Van Bommel should have been fined after making gestures to the Bernabeu crowd following his goal for Bayern last week.
“It shows a lack of respect toward the Madrid fansand I feel that this should never happen. Uefa need to really think about it and the player should apologise. I think that they chose not to fine him because they would rather not get involved” said Salgado
With regard to his team mate Emerson, who has been linked with a move back to Italy this week as Real Madrid look to cut their losses on what has been a disappointing La Liga season for the Brazilian ; Salgado thinks “We have to help him out. A player can be a big player but its something else to come to Real Madrid under the circumstance we are in at the moment and to overcome it. As his team mates we are there to help him out”
Emerson is not the only one who is in danger of being shown the exit door. Coach Fabio Capello, if the Madrid tabloids are to believed, is also playing for his future over the coming three games. Salgado, will not be drawn into a discussion however ; “I don’t want to think about that because I’m a winner. We have to support our coach to the death. With so much to play for this week, we can’t think about losing”
And looking ahead to the game with Barcelona. What does Salgado make of all the criticism that Ronaldinho has been getting over his supposed weight problems?
“He’s scored 17 goals and that is impressive. The truth is, Barcelona havent been at the level they were at last season, so he is coming in for some stick. What they should be looking at is that he’s scored 17 goals”
