Jose Maria Del Nido has been speaking ahead of this weekend’s clash with Barcelona and it is clear that the Sevilla President is enjoying his team’s current success. It comes as no surprise to regular La Liga watchers that Jose Del Nido is enjoying his fifteen minutes in the spotlight along with the opportunity to say “I told you so!” to his numerous, and vociferous critics.
It was only a year ago that fans in the Sanchez Pizjuan were calling for the President’s head.
“I’ll never forget that. But I’m also convinced that the majority of Sevilla fans are aware that what we have achieved is going to be very difficult to repeat” Said the Sevilla President.
But why haven’t we heard the outspoken Del Nido making a claim for the league title?
“You haven’t heard me say it because that would put an unnecessary pressure on the team and because I believe that Barcelona and Real Madrid are unreachable at the moment”
It’s likely that Del Nido is playing games and that privately he feels that Sevilla have a real chance this season. Admittedly they do not have the depth of resources in terms of personnel, but Sevilla are playing as well as anyone else in Spain at the moment and Juande Ramos will not let performances slip.
On their day, Sevilla can beat any of the other top teams in La Liga and the team has the balance right. Perhaps the only concern is in attack and the side could really do with a prolific goal scorer. Kanoute is leading the Pichichi right now but the Malian forward is inconsistent and rarely scores more than a dozen goals a season.
Sevilla’s opponents have their own problems, however, and perhaps now is the time to capitalise. It may not be likely, but nor would is it beyond the realms of the imagination for either Sevilla or Valencia to be lifting the league trophy next summer.
Sevilla will be looking to prove their credentials against Barcelona at the weekend, but the Sevilla President refuses to make any bold predictions;
“You are going to see two of the three best teams in Spain playing each other. Let’s just leave it at that, for now”
