Once again Real Madrid are claiming that they are close to agreeing a new deal with David Beckham. Both player and club have been making noises for some time over a contract extension for the former England captain. Beckham’s deal at the Bernabeu runs out at the end of the season and Real are keen to tie him down for a further two years.
Ramon Calderon insists both he and Fabio Capello are determined to keep Beckham at the club. This would not be the first time, however, that Calderon has claimed that a deal is close and La Liga Review would not be surprised to see Beckham stall on actually putting pen to paper.
The Real Madrid President told Spanish radio that "In the next 15 or 20 days Beckham's renewal will be solved because both Capello and the club are very happy with the player,"
The President may be happy with the player, who, after all is still worth far more to Real commercially than he costs the club in wages. The question is; how happy is Beckham?
This news comes just days after stories have appeared in the English press claiming that Beckham is going through the most difficult period of his entire career after having lost the captaincy and his place in the England squad. The player suffered a further blow this week after Jose Antonio Reyes took Beckham’s place on the right hand side of the Real Madrid midfield, played brilliantly and scored from a free kick.
Beckham faces further uncertainty following the news that Robinho has been assured of his place in the starting eleven for Real’s next match. The Brazilian has reportedly been told to give the team some width and take people on down the flanks. There has been a lot of criticism in the Spanish press over Capello’s tactics and with Diarra and Emerson in the middle, Beckham’s inability to beat a man and get beyond a player means that he is resorting to hitting balls from the halfway line to the forwards. This sounds alarmingly familiar and, like England at the world cup, is making Real Madrid far to predictable in attack.
Beckham is said to be so concerned about his future as a player that he has even consulted Tom Cruise and asked the Hollywood star for advice. He does know that Cruise was only acting in the film Jerry McGuire. Doesn’t he?
