Opening day win for Valencia
In the only game of the day a fairly uneventful first half that had the feel of a pre-season friendly was brought to life with a superb 33rd min strike from Morientes to put Valencia into the lead.
Until the goal, Betis had been the more adventurous of the two as Valencia settled into their customary tactic of looking for oppurtunities on the counter attack. Joaquin's absence was notable in the Betis side as the Andalucians had the greater share of possession but created little; the winger is going to be sorely missed.
Xisco's header (52 mins) gave the visiting side parity early in the second half but Valencia responded quickly and it was not long before Albiol (61 mins) restored the lead for Valencia following a poorly cleared corner.
Valencia went on to dominate the game as Betis capitulated and it took some outstanding saves from Toni Doblas in the Betis goal to prevent a more humiliating margin of defeat for the visitors.
Man of the Match - Vicente : a constant threat and good to see him back to his old self
